TMA Intro to Performance Capture: One Day Course

What you get:

  • A full day in Europe's largest motion capture studio, in a mocap suit, working with cutting edge technology. A maximum class size of twelve students to ensure that you get focused, personalised tuition throughout the day.

  • Expert tuition from John Dower and Oliver Hollis, on how to advance as a mocap actor.

  • Video and 3D animation footage of you, performing a two person scene in the studio, as well as specific footage of your general movement that you can use to start your mocap showreel. This is extremely hard to get under normal circumstances and often takes years to gather but you'll get all the essentials, on film, in a single day.

  • High quality still photographs of you in the studio, which you can add to Spotlight, or use as you require.

  • A certificate of attendance and completion of the course, signed by John and Oliver. This is proof of your training. You can then add the course to your Spotlight CV. Both John, and Oliver, are widely known in the video games industry and completion of this course will certainly grant you credibility.

  • You will be added to a list of performers that are regularly considered for work. John, Oliver, and the technitians that will be present on the day, frequently hire new performers for professional work. Being seen by them genuinely puts you in the running for future work.

  • PDF Guide to Motion Capture. This document lays out the history of mocap, its uses, and development. It contains all the key terminology and essential information, as well as all the material that you will learn on the day. It is a valuable resource that contains over a decade of personal experience and wisdom. For any actor looking to start working in motion capture, this will be your bible.

Performance capture is a vast subject. It takes many years of experience to develop the skills that make an exceptional motion capture performer and can't possibly be covered in a single day. The aim of the introductory course is to teach you the core skills that can then be taken away, practiced and nurtured. You'll be in the mocap suit for most of the day, putting theory into practice in a cutting edge studio environment.

John Dower is a director who has worked in both film and television, as well as directing some groundbreaking video games both here in the UK and in the US. He worked with Peter Molyneux, directing Milo and Kate, a video game project that held emotional truth and sensitivity at its core in a way no other game has. He will be sharing his insights into how to develop a performance that cuts through the technology, bringing real life to a digitally dominated world.

Oliver Hollis is a trained actor who has spent over ten years working as a motion capture artist for the biggest names in video games, all around the world. With over 100 motion capture credits to his name he will be sharing his experience on all the skills an actor needs to develop to stand out in what is a very closed industry. Everything from how to make a showreel for mocap, to the highly complicated and physically demanding shoots that you will face when working on video game projects.
